COLLABORATION BETWEEN YACHT CLUB ITALIANO, EUROPEAN COMMISSION, AND NAUTICAL CONFEDERATION FOR THE REFORESTATION OF POSEIDONIA OCEANICA

The 70th edition of the Rolex Giraglia, one of the most important regattas in the Mediterranean, promotes a concrete initiative for environmental sustainability, demonstrating the commitment of the organizers, including the Yacht Club Italiano, in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility.

The implementation of this initiative aims to support the environmental policies of the territories involved, in a perspective of cooperation for the protection of the marine area involved, a topic of European interest, which the Commission is promoting by requiring strong cooperation between authorities and local entities of different countries, of which the Giraglia is already partly evidence.

Supporting entities include:

- Italian Representation of the European Commission
- Europe Direct Genova
- Nautical Confederation§
- Yacht Club Italian

The implementation is curated by:

- Seascape Ecology Lab, DiSTAV- Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Genoa

THE PROJECT "REFORESTATION OF POSEIDONIA OCEANICA MEADOWS"

Human activities are causing unprecedented rates of biodiversity loss, and the effects of climate change are further exacerbating this decline. For this reason, there are ecosystem restoration programs underway worldwide, in perfect agreement with the ’Decade of Ecosystem Restoration’ (2021-2030) recently launched by the United Nations.

Among these, DiSTAV, Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences of the University of Genoa, has prepared a project for the reforestation of degraded Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Ligurian Sea.

The project, which is intended to be carried out on the occasion of the 70th edition of Rolex, involves the planting of Posidonia in an area of 100 square meters at Pian di Poma (Sanremo).

The duration of the project is 24 months and is structured as follows:

- Identification of the area
- Planting
- Monitoring of the planting

The monitoring of the planting, the data resulting from this activity could be the subject of interesting debates over the next 24 months, within conferences and seminars dedicated to environmental sustainability.

Of this initiative, if accepted, in addition to the participants in the regatta and its stakeholders, extensive information and visibility will be given in the press, on all the websites connected to the event organizers, and on social channels, before, during, and following the event.

On June 8th, in conjunction with World Oceans Day, a presentation of the initiative is planned in Genoa, Palazzo Tursi - Sala Giunta Nuova, at 2:30 pm.

A crowdfunding campaign has also been activated for this initiative, to which you can contribute with a minimal offer. Each of us will thus be able to plant our own Posidonia Oceanica seedling.
